The Meek Shall Inherit the Earth
Matthew 5:5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth”
– Jesus
As a younger man, I often wondered how meek (humble, patient, and kind) people would inherit the Earth. But as I’ve matured and increased my understanding of the spiritual world, it makes sense. All that’s needed to recognize the wisdom in the above Biblical verse is a basic knowledge of God’s laws or even an understanding of history on any continent and of any nation or empire. In the unseen, spiritual world, it is well-established and taught in many belief systems that we all reap the harvest of the seeds we sow. So, if a person consistently sows seeds of kindness and love (in public as well as in private), they can expect to eventually be on the receiving end of the goodwill of others. If one sows seeds of hatred, division, and oppression, then it’s only a matter of time before they’re in the crosshairs of those seeking to do the same to them. If a person sits on their hands or only talks about what they want without putting in any tangible work, then they should meter their expectations and expect less than those who put in the blood and sweat when harvest season arrives.
In the physical world, most nations and governments that conquered by violence and force were eventually overthrown by violence and force. For some organizations and people who fit this description, this inevitable fate simply hasn’t yet come to fruition. Those who spread fear and oppressed in the past eventually lived in fear or had to build a literal or metaphorical fortress to protect themselves as they hid from the inevitable consequences of their actions. Even when people are living in opposition to what is just, it has been my observation that they often subconsciously know that they are taking actions that will result in a horrible end if they stop with the pursuit of worldly control and allow others to live in peace. Because this dark cloud is over their heads and in their hearts, this desperate pursuit of the mirage of power often goes on for the duration of their lives.
To me, the fact that so many who I’ve encountered believe that an omnipresent God is somehow obligated to follow them into an easily avoidable conflict is absurd and delusional. God created man in his image, but many men attempt to recreate God to empower themselves. Unfortunately for them, that’s not how things work.
Many people’s blind pursuit of power and control of others and resources that are not theirs leaves very little room for God to operate. In fact, some folks even bring God into their mess by suggesting that the obsession with worldly influence and the division that they chose for themselves puts God in the position to have to pick a side in the nonsense that they’re tied up in (e.g., politics, senseless deaths, wars, and oppression in various forms). Though, based on history and evidence, I believe that many governments and organizations were set up with the intention of creating a world where a select few are above the laws of man, it almost saddens me to think of the future that some of these people’s actions and intentions have secured for them when they or their offspring can no longer avoid the consequences of repeatedly breaking God’s laws. It’s heartbreaking to see how many seemingly well-intentioned people have no clue that they are caught up in cycles of negativity and adverse consequences of their own actions or the actions of people who they seem to trust with their minds and souls.
Many individuals and groups should consider that there’s a possibility that the Most High sees their behaviors as empowering to enemies of justice and righteousness. I sometimes wonder that if someone repeatedly empowers God’s enemies and aligns with wickedness, at what point does God get fed up and begin to look at them as an opp/enemy as well and turn them over to a reprobate mind? And though many may have never been told this harsh truth, there’s no amount of doubling down or validation from people with like minds and spirits that will make a bad seed produce a good fruit. Meekness, righteous decision-making, and following one’s conscience would make the lives of so many people less chaotic and more whole, but kindness and peace are so foreign to so many that such admirable traits are often viewed as weaknesses. Too many individuals would rather follow crowd than to follow God or their moral compass, and this groupthink mentality that usually only empowers those who have the loyalty of the herd has been the downfall of many.
Though it was cruel and unfortunate, history shows that meekness was often exploited and taken advantage of in the past by the selfish and wicked. However, we currently live in the information era- a time in which no one can hide from accountability and carry out injustice in the darkness. It took ages, but the pen is on the verge being unequivocally mightier than the sword.
Conversely, there are many people who would never root for the oppression or death of another human being. These are the types of pure souls who would stand up for the oppressed and uplift the less fortunate instead of looking down on them. And once that shift takes place, the age of darkness and deceit will be behind us forever. In the future, our descendants will discuss the few millennia of tribulations that were required to trap the wicked and identify their ways so that they never win out again. It’s still an uphill battle, but we’ll get there.
The prophet Asaph showed that he understood the concept of the meek prevailing when he wrote this psalm:
Psalm 73
3 For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
4 For there are no bands in their death: but their strength is firm.
5 They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other men.
6 Therefore pride compasseth them about as a chain; violence covereth them as a garment.
7 Their eyes stand out with fatness: they have more than heart could wish.
8 They are corrupt, and speak wickedly concerning oppression: they speak loftily.
9 They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walketh through the earth.
10 Therefore his people return hither: and waters of a full cup are wrung out to them.
11 And they say, How doth God know? and is there knowledge in the most High?
12 Behold, these are the ungodly, who prosper in the world; they increase in riches.
13 Verily I have cleansed my heart in vain, and washed my hands in innocency.
14 For all the day long have I been plagued, and chastened every morning.
15 If I say, I will speak thus; behold, I should offend against the generation of thy children.
16 When I thought to know this, it was too painful for me;
17 Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end.
18 Surely thou didst set them in slippery places: thou castedst them down into destruction.
19 How are they brought into desolation, as in a moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors.
20 As a dream when one awaketh; so, O Lord, when thou awakest, thou shalt despise their image.
21 Thus my heart was grieved, and I was pricked in my reins.
22 So foolish was I, and ignorant: I was as a beast before thee.
23 Nevertheless I am continually with thee: thou hast holden me by my right hand.
24 Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.
Life doesn’t always go the way we’d like it. Sometimes, it may seem that things are unfair and that injustice is coming out on top. But I encourage you to always keep in mind that time is a construct of man to help organize and make sense of things on Earth. God is eternal, and the issues that we witness are but a blip on the divine timeline. For love and peace to reign for eternity, seeing what the wicked would do with power and control was a necessity for humanity. If God sent his own son, Jesus, to die for the advancement and potential saving of mankind, I don’t think that it’s unreasonable of me to suggest that he might expect us to deal with a little discomfort as we finish the last leg of the race to peace and freedom. All the heavy lifting is done. Hold your square, and always do what’s right… even if that means standing alone.
The meek shall inherit the Earth. It’s only a matter of time.
